Mount Meru Trekking

Welcome to Mount Meru Trekking

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located in northern Tanzania, within Arusha National Park, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Rising to a height of 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), it is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth-highest in Africa. Despite being less famous than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a stunning and rewarding climb that offers rich biodiversity, fewer crowds, and spectacular views.

Trekking and Climbing

Climbing Mount Meru is a popular option for trekkers, often used as an acclimatization hike before attempting Kilimanjaro. The ascent typically takes 3 to 4 days and follows the Momella Route, which begins at the Arusha National Park gate.

Highlights of the trek include:

  • Walking through diverse ecological zones—from grassland and rainforest to alpine desert

  • Wildlife sightings such as giraffes, buffalos, monkeys, and birds

  • A thrilling final ascent along a narrow ridge to the summit (Socialist Peak), offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro at sunrise
