Kilimanjaro FAQ's
Kilimanjaro Climb: All You Need to Know!
Your Questions, Answered the LUSEN Way
Get ready to conquer Africa’s highest peak! Here’s everything future trekkers like you often ask made simple, exciting, and crystal clear.
When’s the Best Time to Climb?
Dreaming of clear skies and epic views?
Aim for January–February or September–October — the dry seasons with pleasant conditions. June to August is also good, but cooler. Want to hike during the rains? Try the Rongai Route, which stays drier even in wet months.
How Many Days Will It Take?
Rushing up? Think again.
Treks range from 5 to 9 days. The longer the trek, the higher your summit success! Short routes like Marangu (5 days) are tempting but give little time to acclimatize. For the best shot at the summit -take your time!
Where Will I Sleep?
No hotels up here – just adventure-ready setups!
Marangu Route: Cozy Mountain huts with bunk beds.
All other routes: Spacious tents (2 people per tent), dining tents, toilet tents, and daily hot water for washing. Our team handles setup and breakdown – all you do is relax!
How Cold Does It Get?
From tropical warmth to arctic chill – Kilimanjaro has it all.
- Base:70–80°F (21–27°C)
- Summit:Drops to -10°F (-23°C) at night
Be prepared for sudden weather changes as you pass through five climate zones!
We’ve got you covered with:
- Tents, mattresses, food, cooking gear, guides, and porters.
You’ll need to bring:
- Sleeping bag (rated 10°F/-12°C), clothes, daypack, water system, duffle bag, and personal items.
Packing list?
You’ll get it in your pre-departure guide!
How Much Will I Carry?
Just your daypack (5–6 lbs) -snacks, water, camera.
The rest? Up to 33 lbs (15 kg) goes in your duffle and is carried by our amazing porters.
Extra luggage? Leave it safely at our office or Hotel.
Who’s On My Climb Team?
You’ll be guided by local heroes:
- English-speaking guides (some with 50+ summits!)
- Skilled mountain chefs
- Strong, experienced porters
We’re proud to hire locals who grew up with the mountain in their backyard.
What If I Can’t Make It to the Top?
Not everyone summits, but every trek is unforgettable.
If you feel unwell or choose to stop, our guides will safely escort you to the nearest camp. Your health and happiness come first!
What If I'm Slower Than Others?
“Pole pole” (Swahili for “slowly”) is the golden rule.
Our treks are paced for acclimatization, not speed. Whether you’re fast or slow, there’s enough time – no pressure!
How Far Will I Walk Each Day?
Think in hours, not miles:
- Start early (6:30 AM breakfast)
- Hike 4–7 hours daily (including breaks)
Summit day is the longest, but the views?
Total worthy it.
Do I Need to Be Super Fit?
- No mountaineering skills needed – but basic fitness helps.
- Start some light training (hiking, cardio) before your trip.
- But remember:altitude affects everyone differently, and determination often matters more than muscles.
Still Curious?
Coming from abroad? 8–10 days minimum is ideal.
Want more? Add time for:
- Mount Meru climb
- Wildlife safari before/after
- Rest days in Moshi or Zanzibar
We can customize your entire trip!
